In the figure above, if x = 4y, then y =

(A) 30
(B) 36
(C) 37.5
(D) 40
(E) 50

We see that the sum of x, y, and 30 is 180, and since x = 4y, we have:

4y + y + 30 = 180

5y = 150

y = 30

Answer: A

It can be written: y + 4y + 30 = 180
that gives 5y = 150
So, y = 30
