In the figure above, n is parallel to p. If x = 30 and y = 80, what is the value of z?

(A) 70
(B) 65
(C) 60
(D) 55
(E) 50

We see that angle z is the vertical angle of (and thus equal to) one of the angles of the smaller triangle shown, angle y is the vertical angle of (and thus equal to) another angle of the smaller triangle, and angle x is the corresponding angle of (and thus equal to) the last angle of the smaller triangle. Thus, x + y + z = 180. Since x = 30 and y = 80, we have:

30 + 80 + z = 180

z = 70

Answer: A
