I think the logic-based approaches above are faster, but if you prefer algebra:

Let x = dollar amount of sales needed
She gets no commission for sales up to $3,000. That first $3,000 must be subtracted from the calculation of x

\($210 + .10(x - $3,000) = $370\)
\($210 + .10x - $300 = $370\)
\(.10x = $460\)
\(x=\frac{$460}{\frac{1}{10}}=$460*10=$4,600\)


Answer C

Answer choices are another quick option.

She makes NO commission until sales are over $3,000. Then she makes 10% commission. Eliminate Answer A = no commission.

Start with C) $4,600

The first $3,000 = no commission. Only 10 percent above $3,000 matters:
($4,600 - $3,000) = $1,600 sales (above $3,000)

She gets 10% of $1,600 = $160
Add to Base salary
Base = $210 + $160 = $370
That's a match.
