Shouldn't it be mentioned in the question that factor 1 only can be used once?

Because else we can generate every sum we want: For example -24 = (-24)* 1 * 1 * 1 * 1 . If we add the factors we get a sum of -19. So if we use enough factors of 1 we can build every number mentioned in the solutions. For example -24 and 13 times 1 add to a sum of -11.

Please help me with this issue.

Consider both +ve and -ve vaalues and calculate sum of the factors...

Keep things simple , GMAT seldom delves into such complexities...

For product of -24, the possible integers are:

  • -24 and 1 or 24 and -1;
  • -12 and 2 or 12 and -2;
  • -6 and 4 or 6 and -4;
  • -8 and 3 or 8 and -3

Checking these against the options given, only -23 fits with integers as -24 and 1.

Correct ans: A

hi, why cant it be option B i.e. -11 as the product of -8*3 or 8*-3 is -24 and sum in any case will be -11?

The sum of -8 and 3 is -5, not -11.
