An alternate way to look at the problem is to compare Base Working hours. 40 hours of Base pay for Y = 37 Hours base pay of X + 2 Hours of Excess work( 1.5*2 = pay for 3 hours of base work). Since Excess hour pays are same for both we just add to get our answer i.e. 37+2+6= 45

Take 37 as the orindary base working hours.

Company Y: Pay above base 37 hours = 3 + 1.5*6 = 12.
Company X: 12 hours work can be covered in extra 12/1.5 = 8 hours.

Hours worked = 37 + 8 = 45.
