The diagram above shows all the possible pairs among 5 cats that were marked 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5. If the diagram were extended so as to represent 9 cats, how many different pairs would the diagram show then?

A) 18
B) 36
C) 41
D) 45
E) 72

The question says the table shows all possible pairs among 5 cats. Since there are 5 cats, there are 5C2 = 10 different pairs possible, and thus 10 “entry boxes” in the table. In the same way, if there are 9 cats, 9C2 = 36 distinct pairs can be formed. Therefore, the table would have 36 “entry boxes” for the 9-cat scenario.
