\(6(87.30 + 0.65) − 5(87.30) =\)

A. 3.90
B. 39.00
C. 90.90
D. 91.20
E. 91.85

Because answer choices C, D, and E are so close to one another, we cannot use approximate values to solve this arithmetic problem. Expanding the first term and simplifying, we have:

6 x 87.30 + 6 x 0.65 - 5 x 87.30

6 x 87.30 - 5 x 87.30 + 6 x 0.65

87.30(6 - 5) + 3.9

87.3 + 3.9 = 91.2

After further solving the given expression we will get 6(87.30) + 6(0.65) - 5(87.30) or 87.3+
3.90= 91.20
hence Ans is D

**Distribute the 6 before adding the numbers in parentheses

\(6(87.30+0.65)−5(87.30) \Rightarrow 6(87.30) + 6(0.65) - 5(87.30)\)

\(87.30 + 6(0.65)\)

\(87.30 + 3.90\)

\(91.2\)

A. 3.90
B. 39.00
C. 90.90
D. 91.20
E. 91.85

NEW question from GMAT® Quantitative Review 2019

(PS03887)

Let \(87.30 = a\)

So, \(6(a + 0.65) − 5a\)

Or, \(6a + 3.90 - 5a\)

Or, \(a + 3.90\)

Substitute the value of a as 87.30 , We have \(a + 3.90 = 87.30 + 3.90 = 91.20\) , Answer must be (D)

This problem can be easily solved by adding decimal values

6(87.30+0.65)−5(87.30)
=6(.30+.65) - 5(.30)
=6(0.95)-0.50
=0.70-0.50
=0.20

As among the answer options only one value has 0.20

Tried this approach on a total whim. 30 seconds (if only every question was like that)

6(87.30+0.65)−5(87.30)

A. 3.90
B. 39.00
C. 90.90
D. 91.20
E. 91.85

6(87.30+0.65)−5(87.30)
= 6(87.95) - 5(87.30)
87.95 is 0.05 short of a full integer
83.70 is 0.70 short

6 x 0.05 = 0.30
5 x 0.70 = 3.50
0.30 + 3.50 = 3.80

Find the choice that would yield a full integer when you add 3.80 to it.
