If xy ≠ 0 and 2x + 3y is equal to 175 percent of 8x, then x/y =

A. 1/16
B. 3/20
C. 3/16
D. 1/4
E. 3/8

Given,

2x + 3y = 175% of 8x

2x + 3y = 1.75 * 8x

2x + 3y = 14x

3y = 12x

\(\frac{x}{y}\) = \(\frac{3}{12}\)
\(\frac{x}{y}\)=\(\frac{1}{4}\)

The best answer is D.

A. 1/16
B. 3/20
C. 3/16
D. 1/4
E. 3/8

\(\frac{175}{100} = \frac{35}{20} = \frac{7}{4}\)

Now, \((2x + 3y) = \frac{7}{4}*8x\)

Or, \(2x + 3y = 14x\)

Or, \(12x =3y\)

Or, \(\frac{x}{y} = \frac{1}{4}\), Answer must be (D)

Solution

Given:
    • 2x + 3y is equal to 175% of 8x, where xy ≠ 0

To find:
    • The value of \(\frac{x}{y}\)

Approach and Working:

175% of 8x = (200% - 25%) of 8x = (2 – ¼) of 8x = 16x – 2x = 14x

Therefore, we can rewrite the given condition as,
    • 2x + 3y = 14x
    Or. 12x = 3y
    Or, \(\frac{x}{y} = \frac{3}{12} = \frac{1}{4}\)

Hence, the correct answer is option D.

Answer: D

Hi All,

We're told that neither X nor Y can be 0 and that (2X + 3Y) is 175% of 8X. We're asked for the value of X/Y. This question can be solved in a number of different ways, including by TESTing THE ANSWERS. Between Answers B and D, Answer D would be an easier Answer to TEST, so let's try that one first...

Answer D: 1/4
IF.... X = 1 and Y = 4
(2X + 3Y) = 2 + 12 = 14
8X = 8
When comparing 14 to 8, we have 14/8 = 7/4 = 1.75... This is an exact match for what we were told, so this MUST be the answer.

Final Answer:

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,

A. 1/16

2x + 3y = 1.75 * 8x
2x + 3y = 14x
3y = 12x
y = 4x

Hence,

x/y = x/4x
x/y = 1/4
