Today, Bill is thirteen times as old as Pete. In nine years, Bill will be four times as old as Pete. How old will Pete be 2 years from today?

A. 3
B. 4
C. 5
D. 6
E. 7

2 scenarios here:

Present:

Pete = p

B= 13p

Future( in 9 years) :

B + 9 = 4( P + 9)

13P + 9 = 4P + 36

9P = 27

P = 3.

Question: Age of Pete after 2 Years.

Present age of Pete = 3

So, Pete will be 5 years old after 2 years.

The best answer is C.

Hi,

For age-word problems, try drawing a table with rows and columns as objects(persons) and time period,

Find below the diagram for the table method to solve such questions.

You can see the answer is 5. Option C.

Table method is nothing different, it just gives a clear picture and avoid confusions when using different time periods.

hope its clear.

Today, Bill is thirteen times as old as Pete. In nine years, Bill will be four times as old as Pete. How old will Pete be 2 years from today?

A. 3
B. 4
C. 5
D. 6
E. 7
Solution:

If we let p = Pete’s current age, then 13p = Bill’s current age. We can create the equation:

13p + 9 = 4(p + 9)

13p + 9 = 4p + 36

9p = 27

p = 3

Since Pete is currently 3 years old, in 2 years, he will be 5 years old.

Answer: C
