How much minimum marks is required to pass the examination?

I. Student A secured 38% in the examination and failed by 8 marks. Student B secured 42% marks in the same examination and got 12 more than the minimum pass marks.
straight forward and logical approach.. the difference in %=difference in marks
So 42-38%=8+12...4%=20
Thus 100%=100*20/4=500....
Passing marks = 38*500/100+8=198.
Sufficient

II. Student A secured 35% of the total marks in the examination and failed by 23 marks. If he had secured 25 more marks his percentage of marks would have been 40%.
40-35%=25...5%=25
Thus 100%=25*100/5=500...
Passing marks=35*500/100+23=175+23=198
Sufficient

III. A student will be declared passed, if he secures 39.60% of the total marks.
Till we do not total marks we cannot find what is 39.60%
Insufficient

Both I and II on their own give answer

D

Not a typical gmat question
