If Brian bought four times as many pencils as Kelly, what could be the total amount of pencils bought?

a) 7
b) 12
c) 15
d) 18
e) 21

Brian bought four times as many pencils as Kelly

Let x = the number of pencils that Kelly bought
So 4x = the number of pencils that Kelly bought

TOTAL number of pencils purchased = (number of pencils that Kelly bought) + (number of pencils that Brian bought)
= x + 4x
= 5x

So, the TOTAL number of pencils purchased equals 5x
This means the TOTAL number of pencils purchased must be divisible by 5

Check the answer choices......
Only answer choice C is divisible by 5

Answer: C

Cheers,
Brent
