10,000 percent of 500 percent of 20 percent less than some positive integer is what percent greater than 400 percent of 20 percent of 10 percent of that positive integer?
A) 499,900 percent
B) 49,990 percent
C) 4,999 percent
D) 499.9 percent
E) 49.99 percent

Solution:

  • 10,000 percent of 500 percent of 20 percent less than some positive integer
    • Can be translated as \(\frac{10000}{100}\times \frac{500}{100}\times (1-\frac{20}{100})\times x\)
      \(=100\times 5\times \frac{80x}{100}\)
      \(=400x\)

  • 400 percent of 20 percent of 10 percent of that positive integer
    • Can be translated as \(\frac{400}{100}\times \frac{20}{100}\times \frac{10}{100}\times x\)
      \(=\frac{8x}{100}\)

  • We are asked the value of \(\frac{400x-\frac{8x}{100}}{\frac{8x}{100}}\times 100\)
    \(=\frac{\frac{40000x-8x}{100}}{\frac{8x}{100}}\times 100\)
    \(=\frac{40000x-8x}{8x}\times 100\)
    \(=499900\%\)

Hence the right answer is Option A

This is a poorly worded question since it's unclear that the 10000 and 500 apply to the number reduced by 20% rather than to the 20% reduction
