A certain computer file contains 8,000 data records, each of which needs to be updated. If it takes 20 seconds to update 100 records, then at the same rate, approximately how many minutes will it take to update all of the records in the file?

(A) 16
(B) 27
(C) 67
(D) 80
(E) 160

We can solve this question using equivalent ratios:

Let x = the number of SECONDS to update all 8000 records.

We can write: 20/100 = x/8000
Cross multiply: 100x = (20)(8000)
Simplify: 100x = 160,000
Solve: x = 1600 SECONDS

To convert 1600 seconds to MINUTES, divide 1600 by 60 to get: 1600/60 = 160/6 = 80/3 = a little more then 25 (since 75/3 = 25, I know that 80/3 is a little more than 25)

Answer:B

Cheers,
Brent

Since it takes 20 seconds to update 100 records, it takes 1/3 of a minute to update 100 records. Thus, the rate is work/time = 100/(1/3) = 300.

Now, we can determine how long it takes to update 8,000 data records.

Time = work/rate

Time = 8,000/300 = 80/3 = 26 2/3 or about 27 minutes.

Answer: B
