Since both of them are trying to do the same work so the work done can be taken as 1 in this case.
Using, Rate * Time = Work
John's Rate, R(J) = Work / Time = 1/50
Mary's Rate, R(M) = Work / time = 1/20
If they are working together then their rates will be added up. So, combined Rate = R(J) + R(M) = 1/50 + 1/20 = 2/100 + 5/100 = 7/100
Time taken by both working together = Work / Rate = 1/ (7/100) = 100/7 min = 14.3 mins
So, Answer will be C.
