Solution

Given:
    • A plane leaves Chicago at 6 A.M. and is scheduled to arrive in San Francisco, 2,150 miles away, 4 hours later.
    • For the first 2 hours of the trip, the pilot maintains an average speed of 450 miles per hour.

To find:
    • If the flight is to arrive as scheduled, then the plane’s average speed, in miles per hour, for the next 2 hours.

Approach and Working:
Let us assume the average speed of the plane for the next 2 hours is v miles per hour.
    • Distance travelled in the first 2 hours = 450 x 2 = 900 miles
    • Distance travelled in the last 2 hours = v x 2 = 2v miles

As the total distance that needs to be covered is 2150 miles, we can say that
    • 900 + 2v = 2150
    Or, 2v = 2150 – 900 = 1250
    Or, v = 1250/2 = 625 miles per hour

Hence, the correct answer is option D.

Answer: D

C. 600
D. 625
E. 650

distance= 2150 miles
speed first 2 hrs = 450 mph
distance covered in 2 hrs = 2*450; 900 miles
distance left = 2150-900 ; 1250 miles
now time to destination 2 hrs
speed should be 1250/2 = 625 mph

We see that total time is 4 hours, and the total distance is 2150 miles.

After 2 hours, the plane has traveled 900 miles, so the plane must travel 2150 - 900 = 1250 miles for the next 2 hours, for an average speed of 1250/2 = 625 mph.
