The sum of two numbers is S. Suppose 3 is added to each number and then each of the resulting numbers is doubled. What is the sum of the final two numbers?

(A) 2S + 3
(B) 3S + 2
(C) 3S + 6
(D) 2S + 6
(E) 2S + 12

a and b
a+b=S .
sum ; 2(a+3)+2(b+3)=2(a+b)+12=
2S +12
IMO E

Hi,

Can you please see if the two numbers are 3 and 7, still the answer will hold true?
Am I missing something??

Raghu8712
at 3 & 7 we will have a+b= s; 10
and
2*6 + 2*10 = 12 +20 ;32
so option E
2S+12 ; 2*10 + 12 ; 32
correct ..

We can let the two numbers be a and b. So we have a + b = S. We need to express 2(a + 3) + 2(b + 3) in terms of S.

2(a + 3) + 2(b + 3)

2a + 6 + 2b + 6

2(a + b) + 12

2S + 12

Answer: E

assume that the two numbers are ''x'' and ''y''

according to the question, x + y = S

we have been asked to find the sum of 2(x+3) + 2(y+3)

by simplifying the above expression, we get: 2(x+y) + 12. If we substitute x+y=S here, the final expression we will get is 2S+12, which is (E).

Therefore, (E) is the right answer choice.

Let two numbers x and y
\(x+y=s\)
\(x+3+y+3=s+6\)
\(2(x+3)+2(y+3)=2(s+6)\)
\(2(x+3)+2(y+3)=2s+12\)

Answer E
