At each basketball practice last week, Jenny made twice as many free throws as she made at the previous practice. At her fifth practice she made 48 free throws. How many free throws did she make at the first practice?

(A) 3
(B) 6
(C) 9
(D) 12
(E) 15

We can let n = the number of free throws made at the first practice:

n = first practice

2n = second practice

2 x 2n = 4n = third practice

2 x 2 x 2n = 8n = fourth practice

2 x 2 x 2 x 2n = 16n = fifth practice

We are told that at the fifth practice she made 48 free throws. Thus, we have:

16n = 48

n = 3

Just keep dividing by 2.

48 then 24 then 12 then 6 then 3.

5th was 48 and 1st was 3.

Since Jenny made twice as many free throws as she made at the previous practice, any of her previous practice must be half as many as the practice right after it. Therefore, we can work backward to determine the number of free throws she made at the first practice:

5th = 48

4th = 24

3rd = 12

2nd = 6

1st = 3
