Jack is putting together gift boxes at a rate of 3 per hour in the first hour. Then Jill comes over and yells, “Work faster!” Jack, now nervous, works at the rate of only 2 gift boxes per hour for the next 2 hours. Then Alexandra comes to Jack and whispers, “The steadiest hand is capable of the divine.” Jack, calmer, then puts together 5 gift boxes in the fourth hour. What is the average rate at which Jack puts together gift boxes over the entire period?

A. 2 boxes per hour
B. 3 boxes per hour
C. 4 boxes per hour
D. 5 boxes per hour
E. 6 boxes per hour

total hours;4
and total gifts ; 3+4+5 ; 12
rate ; 12/4; 3 boxes per hour

Total work : 3 + 4 (2*2) + 5 = 12

Total Hr : 1+2+1 = 4

Avg Rate = Total Work / Total Time = 12/4 = 3 Per Hr

Hope the method is correct

Another way to think about this is in terms of weighted average, say, hour X number of boxes.

First set: 1*3

Second set: 2*2

Third set: 1*5

Average rate = Sum of sets/Total hours = (3+4+5)/4 = 3

For this simple problem, this method of thinking may be onerous. But it may prove to be useful when considering a long series.
