300 miles North and 400 miles west basically forms a right angled triangle with sides 3 and 4. So the third side will be 5. which is 500 miles. (3,4,5 Triplet)

sqrt( (400)^2 + (300)^2 )
= sqrt ( 250000)
= 500
sqrt( (400)^2 + (300)^2 )
