Price of Rice increased from $40 to $41
--> % Increase = \(\frac{(41 - 40)}{40}*100\) = \(\frac{1}{40}*100\) = 2.5 %

Price of Wheat increased from $25 to $28.50
--> % Increase = \(\frac{(28.50 - 25)}{25}*100\) = \(\frac{3.5}{25}*100\) = 14 %

Increase in Wheat percent over Rice percent = 14 - 2.5 = 11.5

Increase in rice price/kg = $ 1
Increase in wheat price/kg = $ 3.5

Rice % change = 1/40*100 = 2.5 %
Wheat % change= 3.5/25*100= 14 %

So, the percent increase in the price of Wheat was 11.5 % greater than the percent increase in the value of Rice.

Rice —40–> 41
Wheat —25–>28.5

Rice:
40–100%
41–x
—> x=41*100/40=102.5%
102.5%—100%=2.5% increase

Wheat:
25–100%
28.5–x
—> x=28.5*100/25= 114%
114%–100%=14%

14%—2.5%= 11.5%
The answer is D.

% Increase (Wheat - Rice) = ?
Wheat: 28.50/25-1… 3.5/25…35/250…7/50
Rice: 41/40-1… 1/40
% Increase (Wheat - Rice) = 7/50-1/40 = 280-50/2000 = 230/2000 = 11.5/100 = 11.5

Simple question made tough by tricky language.

How many percentage greater is the percentage rise of Wheat price than percentage rise in rice.

Percentage rise of rice \(= \frac{(41 - 40)}{40} * 100 = 2.5%\)
Percentage rise of rice \(= \frac{(28.5 - 25)}{25} * 100 = 14%\)

Answer = 14 - 2.5 = 11.5

Answer D.

Competition Mode Question

Last year the price of Rice was $40 per kg and the price of Wheat was $25 per kg. This year the price of Rice is $41 per kg and the price of Wheat is $28.50 per kg. The percent increase in the price of Wheat was how many percentage greater than the percent increase in the value of Rice?

A. 2.5
B. 6.25
C. 10.32
D. 11.5
E. 12.55

The percent increase in the price of wheat is:

(28.5 - 25)/25 x 100 = 14

The percent increase in the price of rice is:

(41 - 40)/40 x 100 = 2.5

Therefore, the percent increase in the price of wheat was 14 - 2.5 = 11.5 percentage points greater than the percent increase in the value of rice.

The percent increase in the price of wheat is:

(28.5 - 25)/25 = 3.5/25 = 35/250 = 7/50 = 14/100 = 14%

The percent increase in the price of rice is:

(41 - 40)/40 = 1/40 = 5/200 = 2.5/100 = 2.5%

So, the difference is 14% minus 2.5% = 11.5%
