The average of two numbers is X*Y. If the first number is Y, what is the other number?

(A) 2XY-Y

(B) XY-2Y

(C) 2XY-X

(D) Z

(E) XY-Y

Let N denote the other number. We can create the equation:

XY = (Y + N)/2

2XY = Y + N

2XY - Y = N

Answer: A

let a be the average and z be another no.
y+z = 2a
But average a is xy
y+z = 2xy
z = 2xy - y
A
