I just did some math to discard the options.

I started with the middle option of 10 and you quickly realize that after the first year they will have recruited 20 new members so after the 3rd year they will have way more than 35 members. Therefore the answer must be lower than 10.

Then i tried with 7 and then, they must get 14 new students on the next year and then 28 on the 3rd one, another answer that is way too much.

Therefore the answer must be 5. You can quicky check that 5 is the answer, in the second year they will have 10 new members and in the second one 20 and therefore 5 + 10 + 20 = 35 so its the correct answer.

This approach took me about 40 secs and i guess some people who are quicker at mental math could do it faster :)
