Number of days taken to do certain work by X men= 25-8=17
Number of days taken to do the same work by (X-Y) men= 25
Efficiency(X men) : Efficiency(X-Y men)= 25:17
X:(X-Y)= 25:17
As total number of persons is not more than total number of initial days to complete the work, X must be 25.
Y= 25-17=8
Number of days taken to do the same work by (X-Y) men= 25

Rate of X men = 1/25
Rate of each men = 1/25X
Using RT=W equation
Amount of work completed in first 8 days = 8/25
Work to be completed = 17/25
(X-Y) (1/25X) 25 = 17/25
8X = 25Y
X = (25/8) Y
Y can be 8
