It is all about making equation out of words..

Ten years ago, Josh was three times as old as Tim.
Let the ages be J and T.
So, ten years ago, the age were J-10 and T-10.
Thus (J-10)=3(T-10)......J=3T-20....(i)

In five years, Josh will be 10 years more than twice as old as Tim.
(J+5)=2(T+5)+10.......J+5=2T+10+10........J=2T+15...(ii)

Equating i and ii,
3T-20=2T+15.......T=35

solve step by step
j-10 = 3(t-10)
j-3t=-20
j=3t-20
second part
j+5=10+2(t+5)
j+5=20+2t

3t-20=15+2t
t= 35

Present age of Josh = J
Present age of Tim = T

J-10 = 3(t-10)
J + 5 = 2(t+5) + 10
substituting value of J in 2nd equation
3t - 30 + 10 + 5 = 2t + 10 + 10
T = 35

Letting J = Josh’s current age and T = Tim’s current age, we can create the equations:

J - 10 = 3(T - 10)

and

J + 5 = 10 + 2(T + 5)

Subtracting the first equation from the second, we have:

15 = 10 + 2(T + 5) - 3(T - 10)

15 = 10 + 2T + 10 - 3T + 30

15 = -T + 50

T = 35

Answer: E
