In a certain History class, the number of boys exceeds the number of girls by one-fourth of the total number of students in the class. What is the ratio of the number of boys to the number of girls in the class?
(A) 1 to 2

(B) 3 to 5

(C) 3 to 2

(d) 5 to 3

(E) 2 to 1

We can let b = the number of boys and g = the number of girls in the class. Thus, the total number of students in the class is (b + g). We can create the equation:

b = 1/4(b + g) + g

4b = b + g + 4g

3b = 5g

b/g = 5/3

Answer: D

Let,
total no of students(b+g) = 8

boys exceeds girls, i.e, b - g = 1/4 of 8 = 2

Now, we have, b + g = 8....... (1) & b - g = 2.....(2)
(1) + (2) => b+g+b-g = 8+2.... hence, b = 5 & g = 3
Therefore, b:g = 5:3

Kudos, if you found it helpful✌✌✌
