A coin collection has 150 pennies and 350 nickels. If 40% of the pennies and 60% of the nickels were minted prior to 1982, what percent of all the coins in the collection were minted prior to 1982?

(A) 51%
(B) 52%
(C) 53%
(D) 54%
(E) 55%
Solution:

The number of pennies that were minted prior to 1982 is 150 x 0.4 = 60. The number of nickels that were minted prior to 1982 is 350 x 0.6 = 210, Therefore, the number of coins that were minted prior to 1982 is:

[(60 + 210) / (150 + 350)] x 100 = (270/500) x 100 = 270/5 = 54 percent of the total number of coins.

The number of pennies that were minted prior to 1982 = 150 x 0.4 => 60
The number of nickels that were minted prior to 1982 = 350 x 0.6 => 210
Total = 60+210 =270
%age = (270/500)*100=54%
