In other words, the average remains the same when we add 2 quantities. So that means distance of 18 from average should be same as 54's distance from average.

\(x-18=54-x\)
\(x =36\) (average)

Now, \(18 = 36 - 2(N+1)\)
Therefore, \(N = 8\) (number of terms)

Can you explain this please?
PRI23YA
I think the conventional substitution method is time consuming. Apart from the usual plug-in method, try prime factorisation for 28,30,40,54==>> 2^3.3^3.5^1.7^1.

now sum the powers==> 3+3+1+1=8.

Try this only when you're out of time and in need of an educated guess.
