A smoothie with 2% strawberry syrup and 5% mango syrup is made in milk. How much more strawberry syrup (in litres) must be added to 12 litres of smoothie so that the smoothie contains 4% strawberry syrup by volume?

A) 1/4
B) 1/2
C) 1
D) 2
E) 4

0.24+X=(12+X)*0.04
24+100X=48+4X
96X=24
X=1/4
A:)

smoothie need to contain 4%
1200 ml has 2% of strawberry = 24ml

4/100 *(1200+ x) = 24+x
4800+4x= 2400+100x
96x=2400
x=25ml
means 1/4l

Deconstructing the Question

Initial smoothie = 12 litres.

Strawberry content = 2%.

Initial strawberry amount:

\(0.02 \times 12 = 0.24\)

Let x be the litres of strawberry syrup added.

New strawberry amount:

\(0.24 + x\)

New total volume:

\(12 + x\)

We want final concentration to be 4%:

\(\frac{0.24 + x}{12 + x} = 0.04\)

Step-by-step

\(0.24 + x = 0.04(12 + x)\)

\(0.24 + x = 0.48 + 0.04x\)

\(x - 0.04x = 0.48 - 0.24\)

\(0.96x = 0.24\)

\(x = \frac{0.24}{0.96} = 0.25 = \frac{1}{4}\)
