Cost of one 5 minute call = 0.5 + 4(0.34) = 0.5 + 1.36 = 1.86

Cost of three 5 minute calls = 1.86*3 = 5.58

Cost of 15 minute call = 0.5 + 14(0.34) = 0.5 + 4.76 = 5.26

Difference = 5.58 - 5.26 = 0.32

We really do not need to do the lengthy calculation here in this question...

The only difference will be that for the three- 5 minute calls 0.5 $ will be charged for the first minutes three times..while in One- 15 minute call 0.50$ will be charged for the first minute only once...

So we basically need to take the difference of extra cost of first minutes only...

Which will be...

2 * (0.5 - 0.34) = 2* 0.16

= 0.32

The charge for a telephone call made at 10:00 a.m. from City Y to City X is $0.50 for the first minute and $0.34 for each additional minute. At these rates, what is the difference between the total cost of three 5-minute calls and the cost of one 15-minute call?

(A) $0.00

(B) $0.16

(C) $0.32

(D) $0.48

(E) $1.00

You don't have to calculate the cost entirely.

The only difference is those 2 calls that will be treated as first calls instead of a subsequent minute. the difference in each of those calls is 0.16$. So for 2 such calls difference will be 0.32$
