Beth's Bridal Shop sells two designer gowns online: Victorian Lady and Summer Delight. Selling just these two products, the company makes $44,995 in profits each year on the sale of 450 gowns. If the profit per gown is $75 and $140 for Victorian Lady and Summer Delight, respectively, how many Victorian Lace gowns does the shop sell per year?

A. 173
B. 177
C. 273
D. 277
E. 303

Solution

    • Let us assume that out of 450 gowns sold each year, v are Victorian Lady gowns and s are Summer Delight gowns.
      o \( v + s = 450 ……….Eq.(i)\)
    • Now, the profit on selling these 450 gowns is $44,995,
      o This means, \(75*v + 140*s = 44,995\)
o Dividing both sides of the above equation by 5, we get,
         \(15*v + 28*s = 8,999 …….Eq.(ii)\)
    • Multiplying both sides of Eq.(i) by 28, we get
      o \(28v +28s = 28*450 \)
    • Now, subtracting Eq.(ii) from the above equation, we get,
      o \(13v = 28*450 – 8999 ⟹ 13v = 3601 ⟹ v = 277\)
Thus, the correct answer is Option D.

Profits/ year = $44995
Number of gowns sold= 450
Profit per gown for Victoria (V)= $75
Profit per gown for Summer (S) = $ 140

Equation 1: based on profits earned

75V + 140S = 44995

Equation 2: based on total number of gowns sold

V+S= 450

Multiple equation 2 with 75

New equation 2: 75V + 75S= 33750

Compare equation 1 and new equation 2:

75V + 140S= 44995
75V + 75S= 33750

Change the signs and cancel, to get:

65S= 11245
S= 173

Therefore, V= 277 (D)

We can estimate and use weighted average logic.

Since the total overall profits is very close to a multiple of the 450 gown —- let overall profits be $45,000

Overall Profits per dress = ($45,000) / 450 = $100

V = number of Victorian dresses sold ——> profit per dress sold = $75

D = number of Summer Design dresses sold ——> profit per dress sold = $140

V ………………... D
75 ……………… 140
…….…(100)……….
____________________
40………………… 25

Ratio of Dressed sold is =

V : D = 40 : 25 = 8 : 5

8/13 of the 450 dresses will be V dresses

(8/13) (450) = (8) (34 and 8/13) =

8/13 is a little greater than > 1/2

Around: (8) (34.5) = 276

Since this is a little bit of an underestimate, the correct answer should be

277
