To dilute 300 quarts of a 25% solution of garlic to a 20% solution, how much water should a chef add?

A. 15
B. 60
C. 75
D. 120
E. 125
since the quantity of garlic will be same
C1V1=C2V2
1/4*300=1/5(300+X)
5/4*300-300=X
X=300/4
X=75

300 * 25% = 75 quarts of pure garlic. In order to make the 75 quarts of garlic 20% of a solution, we need 75/20% = 75 * 5 = 375 quarts of a solution total.

Right now we have 300 quarts so add 75 quarts of water.

let w=quarts of water to be added
.75*300+w=.8(300+w)→
w=75 quarts

In the 300 quarts of the 25% solution, there are 300 * 0.25 = 75 quarts of garlic. If we add x quarts of water to the solution, the number of quarts of garlic will not change, but the total volume of the solution will increase by x quarts. We want the new concentration to be 20%, so we can write:

\(\Rightarrow\) 75/(300 + x) = 20/100

\(\Rightarrow\) 75/(300 + x) = 1/5

\(\Rightarrow\) 375 = 300 + x

\(\Rightarrow\) 75 = x
