Three consecutive even integers have a sum of 102. If x represents the least number in the set, what equation can be used to determine the value of the sum of the integers?

A. x + (x + 1) + (x + 2) = 102

B. x + (x + 1) + (x + 3) = 102

C. x + (x + 2) + (x + 4) = 102

D. x + 2x + 4x = 102

E. x + x + x = 102

There is something wrong with the question -- it asks "what equation can be used to determine the value of the sum of the integers?" We don't need to use an equation to find the sum of the integers; we know the sum is 102.

I imagine the question means to ask what equation could be used to find x, in which case C is the answer.

Since the question stem mentions that there are three consecutive even integers have a sum of 102, so we can assume 'x' to be a even integer

adding multiples of 2 to x will give a set of consecutive even numbers
so x, x+2,x +4, are the three integers we are looking for

So OA : C

E. x + x + x = 102

Given X is the 1st integer
Therefore,
2nd No= X+2
3rd NO= X+4

Option C justifies the submission of 3 numbers

C. x + (x + 2) + (x + 4) = 102

D. x + 2x + 4x = 102

E. x + x + x = 102

Solution:

Since the least even integer in the set is x, the next even integer is x + 2 and the one after that (i.e., the largest) even integer is x + 4. Therefore, the equation should be:

x + (x + 2) + (x + 4) = 102
