If Sierra’s scores on her first three tests were 90, 93, and 98, what must she score on the fourth test to have 95 as her test average?

A. 95

B. 96

To save on a bit of time, you can deal with the distance of each number from 95..
90-95=-5
93-95=-2
98-95=3....
Total difference = -5-2+3=-4, so the new number should be 4 more than 95 => 95+4=99

The average of 4 tests is 95. Therefore, Sum is 4 * 95 = 380

Scores of first three tests: 90 + 93 + 98 = 281

Fourth test score: 380 - 281 = 99

Let x = Sierra’s 4th test score. We can create the equation:

(90 + 93 + 98 + x) / 4 = 95

281 + x = 380

x = 99
