If an industrial worker rejects 0.03% of screws as defective, how many screws does he examine to reject 300 screws?

A. 1,000
B. 10,000
C. 100,000
D. 1,000,000
E. 10,000,000
Solution:

We can let n be the number of screws the worker examines and create the equation:

0.03/100 * n = 300

n = 300 * 100/0.03 = 10,000 * 100 = 1,000,000

Answer: D

Deconstructing the Question

An industrial worker rejects \(0.03\%\) of screws as defective.

We are told that he rejected

\(300\)

screws.

We need to find the total number of screws examined.

Step-by-step

Convert the percentage to decimal form.

\(0.03\%=\frac{0.03}{100}=0.0003\)

Let the total number of screws be

\(N\)

Then

\(0.0003N=300\)

Solve

\(N=\frac{300}{0.0003}\)

Multiply numerator and denominator by \(10000\)

\(N=\frac{300\times10000}{3}\)

\(N=1000000\)
