The plane traveled twice as far on the first flight as on the second flight, and the plane traveled three times as far on the second flight as on the third flight. Let's reverse-engineer this information.

The third flight was  45  miles. The plane traveled  three times  as far on the second flight as on the third flight   
So, length of second flight = ( 3 )(  45  ) =   135

The plane traveled  twice  as far on the first flight as on the second flight   
So, length of first flight = ( 2 )(  135  ) =   270

3rd flight =  45  miles 2nd Flight is  45*3 = 135  1st flight is  135*2 = 270

So, Total distance travelled in the 1st flight is 270 mils, Annswer must be (E)
