If 35% of a number is decreased by 15, then the result is 25% of the original number. What is the original number?

0.35x - 15 = 0.25x
0.1x = 15
x = 150

If 35% of a number is decreased by 15, then the result is 25% of the original number. What is the original number?

(A) 1.5
(B) 9
(C) 25
(D) 150
(E) 900

Source: GMAT Official Practice
Solution:

We can let x be the number and create the equation:

0.35x - 15 = 0.25x

0.1x = 15

x = 150

Answer: D

Difference of the percentage be=35%-25%= 10%
and difference of the original value be=15
Then, 10%=15
or, 100%= 150
So, the original number be= 150
