Experts,

Please advise if this approach is ok..

We have 4 letters M (1) - I(4) - P(2) - S(4)

Total possible 3 letter number if all the letters without restriction of number of letters is 4 x 4 x 4 = 64

Form these we need to remove some options since M not possible with 2 Ms and P not possible with 3 Ps.

(1) 3 same letter words MMM & PPP --- 2
(2) 2 Letter words with 2 Ms - 1 (M) x 1(M) x 3(any one of I,S,P) x 3 (possible placements i.e, 3rd letter other than M can be placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd place)---Total 9

So the answer is 64 - 2 -9 = 53.

You are perfectly fine with your approach. This is another way to look at the question.
Good job.
