Few questions:

In a coconut grove, (x + 2) trees yield 60 nuts per year, x trees yield 120 nuts per year, and (x − 2) trees yield 180 nuts per year. If the average yield per year per tree be 100, what is the value of x?

1. The question does not mention that each tree yields (60, 120 or 180) nuts. It mentions that (say) X+2 trees yield 60 nuts. How are we saying it is 60 nuts per tree in a total of x+2 trees?

2. The avg mentioned is per year per tree, again this doesnt account for (say) X+2 trees, but 1 tree out of x+2

Am i reading too much into the question or is it ambiguous?

I agree with you.Sometimes some solutions are constructed so that it matches with the given OA.But that should not be the case. Question should be interpreted by how it is stated rather than interpreting it according to the OA. Because in real exam we wouldn't know the OA.

After reading the question this is what I did, of course I was surprised when it did not match with the given options:

\(\frac{ {60}+{120}+{180}}{(x+2)+(x)+(x-2)} = 100 \)

\(x = 1.2 \)

Hope it helps to some extent.
