If y – x = 5 and 2y + z = 11, what is the value of x + y + z?

A. 3
B. 6
C. 8
D. 16
E. 17
I have nothing mind-blowing to add to what others have already posted, but I solved the question quickly by aligning the two equations and using elimination, subtracting one whole equation from the other:

\(2y + z = 11\)
-
\( y - x = 5\)

\(y + z + x = 6\)

The answer took nothing more than mental manipulation and about 30 seconds.

Asked: If y – x = 5 and 2y + z = 11, what is the value of x + y + z?

y = x + 5
2y + z = x + 5 + y + z = 11
x + y + z = 11 - 5 = 6
