We can solve this question using equivalent ratios
Given: (# of freshman)/(# of sophomores) = 5/3
Since 18 of the students are sophomores, we can write: (# of freshman)/(18) = 5/3
Cross multiply to get: (3)(# of freshman) = (5)(18)
Simplify: (3)(# of freshman) = 90
Solve: # of freshman = 30
So there are 18 sophomores and 30 freshmen, which means the total number of students = 18 + 30 = 48
Answer: D
