There are 5 machines with the same work rate. If 4 of these machines were working and then the fifth is added to shorten the completion time of the work by k percent, then what is the value of k?

(A) 10
(B) 12
(C) 15
(D) 16
(E) 20

Poorly worded. The question seems to suggest that 5th is added while 4 of them were already working, but then does not give after how much time is 5th added.
So, we are looking at all 5 working from beginning and how much time is saved as compared to only 4 machines working.

I. Straight forward

The time spent would be in the opposite ratio of number of machines.
So 5:4 machines = 4:5 time.
Saving in time as a % = \(\frac{5-4}{5}*100=20\)

E

Yes, I went nuts for about 20 minutes and then gave up to see how fellow GC members have approached this. Feels good to realize that the question has not been worded correctly and conveys a different meaning.
