The ratio of the cost of a wooden plank to the length of a wooden plank is constant. A plank measuring 6 feet long costs $96. Jordan wants to buy planks that measure 10 feet in length, and Kristen wants to buy planks that are 7.5 feet in length. How much more, in dollars, will Jordan pay per plank?

A. 40
B. 45
C. 120
D. 135
E. 160

The cost per foot is 96/6 = 16.

Jordan’s 10-foot plank costs 10 * 16 = 160.

Kristen’s 7.5-foot plank costs 7.5 * 16 = 120.

Difference 160 - 120 = 40.

Answer: A.

Hi Bunuel, could you kindly explain the question again? How much more, in dollars, will Jordan pay per plank?
- Why not only consider the 120 additional planks from Kristen as the answer?
- Why should calculate the difference? 160-120 instead.

$120 is simply the price Kristen pays for one 7.5-foot plank.

The question asks, “How much more will Jordan pay per plank?” So we need the difference between Jordan’s price and Kristen’s price:

$160 - $120 = $40.

Thus, Jordan pays $40 more per plank.
