Twenty percent of the employees of a certain company have stock options. Among the employees who do not have stock options, 28 were not eligible for the options and 20 refused them. How many employees have stock options?

A. 8
B. 10
C. 12
D. 15
E. 24

If (i) the instinct is to set up an algebraic equation and introduce a variable that doesn't appear in the question and (ii) the answer choices are just numbers, there's a great chance you can use Plugging In The Answers (PITA). I like trying B and D.

B: 10 have stock options, so 50 total employees. 10 have + 28 not eligible + 20 refused = 58 total. That's too many.

D: 15 have stock options, so 75 total employees. 15 have + 28 not eligible + 20 refused = 63 total. That's not enough.

We want something between "too many" and "not enough," so it has to be C.

Answer choice C.

0.2x have stock options and 0.8x don't have stock options
0.8x = 28 + 20 = 48
or x = 48/0.8 = 60
=> x = 60

0.2 X = 12
