In a bus, there are 20 rows, and each row has 2 seats on either side of the aisle. There are 2 emergency windows on each side of the bus at either end and each emergency window can be operated from exactly two window seats. If a person has opted for a window seat, then what is the probability that he will be assigned to a seat from which the emergency windows can be operated?

The bus has 20 rows, and each row has two window seats and two aisle seats. Total window seats in the bus = 20 * 2 = 40
Number of emergency windows = 2 on either sides = 2 * 2 = 4
Each emergency window can be operated from two window seats, hence the four emergency windows can be operated from 4 * 2 = 8 window seats.
Hence if a person is seated in any of these 8 seats, he/she can operate one of the emergency windows.
Required Probability = \(\frac{8}{40}\)
= \(\frac{1}{5}\)
