Roy was paid at a fixed hourly rate for the 38 hours that he worked in a certain week and at a different fixed hourly rate for the 30 hours that he worked the following week. If Roy's gross weekly pay was the same for both weeks, approximately what was the percent change in his hourly pay rate from the first week to the following week?

(A) 27% decrease
(B) 21% decrease
(C) 0% change
(D) 21% increase
(E) 27% increase

Assume Roy was paid a total of $38 for each week.

In the first week, he was paid $38/38 = $1 per hour.

In the second week, he was paid $38/30, which is a bit less than $39/30 = $13/10 = $1.3. Thus, the approximate percent increase in his hourly pay rate was around 27%.

Answer: E.

I used the percent change formula and some estimation to find the answer:

Percent Change = New - Old / Old (I flipped this numerator of this formula, because we know the change is positive as he made the same amount in 8 less hours)

(38-30)/38 = 8/30

Simplified: 4/19

Estimate: 4/19 is approximately 5/20, which simplifies to 1/4. Now you know your answer is approximately 25%, which is closest to 27%. From there you know its an increase because he made the same amount in less hours

Answer E.) 27% Increase

Roy was paid at a fixed hourly rate for the 38 hours that he worked in a certain week and at a different fixed hourly rate for the 30 hours that he worked the following week. If Roy's gross weekly pay was the same for both weeks, approximately what was the percent change in his hourly pay rate from the first week to the following week?

The change in the hourly rate must have been an increase because he worked fewer hours the second week. So, we're down to (D) and (E).

His number of hours the second week, 30, was a little over 3/4 of the 38 hours the first week. So, to make the pay for the two weeks even, his rate of pay for the second week has to be a little under 4/3 the rate the first week.

So, the increase has to be a little under 1/3.

A 21% increase is not close to a 1/3 increase, and a 27% increase is close to a 1/3 increase. So, (E) it is.

(A) 27% decrease
(B) 21% decrease
(C) 0% change
(D) 21% increase
(E) 27% increase

Correct answer: E

38 hrs x pay for week 1 = 30 hours x pay for week 2

Directly take pay for week 1 = 30 dollars
pay for week 2 = 38 dollars

Increase = 38-30/30 x 100 = 8/30 x 100 = 26.67% = 27%

1. Find the MCM which is 1140.
2. Divide 1140/38=30 (First week) and 1140/30=38 (Following week)
3. Divide 38/30=1.26666

That means the change was an increase of 27%
