If the number of girls were equal to the number of boys, then the girls' average would need to be 3.9 for the overall average to be 4.1 (since 4.1 is exactly the midpoint between 4.3 and 3.9). However, because there are fewer girls than boys—and the boys’ average (4.3) is pulling the overall average upward—the girls’ average must be even lower than 3.9. only A satisfies.

In a certain group of 10 children, there are 6 boys, and their average (arithemetic mean) age is exactly 4.3 years. If the average age of all the children in the group is exactly 4.1 years, what is the average age of the girls in the group, in years?

A. 3.8
B. 3.9
C. 4.2
D. 4.5
E. 4.6

Way to solve without heavy calcs:

Difference between average and boys average = 0.2.
Adding the total difference the boys have its 0.2 * 6 = 1.2.

Girls must bring this difference back to 0, hence each of the 4 girls would have to be 1.2/4 = 0.3 less than the average.

4.1 - 0.3 = 3.8 = answer.
