We first want to determine the total number of times that the starting value will decrease by a quarter. This is found by taking the total time period (9 years) and dividing it by the number of years it takes to decrease by a quarter (3 years). 9 divided by 3 is 3, so 3 decreases will happen.
Now, when something decreases by a quarter, that means that three-quarters of the original is left behind.
