For how many integral values of x, the expression x^2 – 7x -2 is always less than 6 and greater than -8?

A) 0
B) 1
C) 2
D) 3
E) 4

We have: x^2 – 7x -2 < 6 and x^2 – 7x -2 > -8

i) x^2 – 7x -2 < 6 => x^2 – 7x -8 < 0
=> (x-8)(x+1)<0
=> -1 < x < 8 (for a "smaller than" quadratic inequality, the region is 'between the roots')

ii) x^2 – 7x -2 > -8 => x^2 – 7x +6 > 0
=> (x-6)(x-1)>0
=> x < 1 or x > 6 (for a "greater than" quadratic inequality, the region is 'smaller than the lower root' or 'greater than the higher root')

Combining both: -1 < x < 1 or 6 < x < 8

Thus, integer values of x = 0 or 7
