An outgoing batch of students wants to gift a PA system worth $4200 to their school. If the teachers offer to pay 50% more than the students, and an external benefactor gives three times teachers’ contribution, how much should the teachers donate?

(A) 600
(B) 840
(C) 900
(D) 1200
(E) 1800

The total value of the PA system = $4200

The ratio of contribution of Teacher = 50% more than that of students.

T = (1+1/2)*S

T = (3/2)*S

T: S = 3x : 2x

Moreover, it’s mentioned that external benefactor donates 3 times as teacher does.

Ext Benefactor = 3* (3x) = 9x

Teacher : Student : External Benefactor = 3x : 2x : 9x . Totally = 14x

Given that 14x = $4200

x = $300

Contribution of Teacher = 3x = 3*$300 = $900.

Let, students pay= x
Teachers pay= 1.50*x =?
External benefactor pay= 3*(1.50x)= 4.50x
x+1.50x+4.50x=4200
x=600
Teachers pay= 1.50x =1.5*600=900
