A solution contained 50% alcohol. When 40 liters of water was added, the resultant solution contained 40% alcohol. The resultant solution contained how many liters of water?

Soln:
Let us assume total soln as 100 x Ltrs.
As said the alcohol % is 50% ,hence we can deduce that the water % is also 50%.Therefore 100x ltrs total soln contain 50x ltrs alcohol & 50x ltrs water.
Addition of 40 ltrs of water change the alcohol % of the soln to 40% .Or the water % in the soln is 60%
{(50x+40)/(100x+40)}x100 = 60
(50x+40)*5=3*(100x+40)
250x+200=300x+120
80=50x
or x=8/5
substituting x=8/5 in (50x+40 ) we get 80+40=120 ltrs.
Let us assume total soln as 100 x Ltrs.

Let X represent the total volume of the original solution.
0.5x / (x + 40) = 0.4
x = 160
The total number of liters of the new solution is 160 + 40 = 200.
Since 40% of this new solution is alcohol, then 60% of this new solution is water.
0.6 * 200 = 120 (C)
